ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Reenie Barrow

My photographs represent my longstanding interest in documenting the details of daily life around the world.  My career has led me on explorations from Havana to Hanoi. .  The images I have made concern quiet places..places that soothe, places that inspire, places that give pleasure to the senses.  In focusing my attention on specific objects, I am attempting to portray the ordinary as objects of inherent beauty worthy of scrutiny and contemplation.  Five years of travel to Greek mountain villages culminated with the publication of my book, Wreath of Dreams:  Visions of Greek Villages (Kastaniotis Editions).

Most recently my attention has been focused on making flower images as metaphors.  My goal is to make my photographs work on two levels…visual and emotional…to make them visually compelling as well as serving as catalysts for the viewer to contemplate words, sensations, or memories.

I find I can most effectively allow each flower to tell its story by using a simple background and relying on the balance, symmetry, and interaction between the flowers to create its tale.

I am playing with the use of Latin to categorize botanical specimens by using Latin words to create a title for each of the stories unfolding behind the glass. An equally compelling reason for me to use Latin is a nod and tribute to my grandmother, Yester Samuelian, who as a student in Marzvan  College in 1899, did a series of botanical pressings… all with their proper Latin names. They proudly grace the walls of my home today.

I have used Spanish for the Calla Lilly photographs because these were all done in Mexico and as a tribute to renowned Mexican artists who used Calla Lilies extensively in their photographs and paintings.

Other than my flower images, I use place as the title.
I have enjoyed exhibiting my images around the world, and one of the most fun aspects of doing this is getting to meet people in each country, whether over a cup of tea in their kitchens, or over a glass of wine at an opening.  I am constantly so graciously received that I only hope I am giving something of value back to them.

About the Artists:

Robert Elibekian (1941 – ):
Renowned artist Robert Elibekian, born in Tbilisi, Georgia, and a member of the Armenian Artist Union since 1970, unveils a collection spanning his prime artistic years from 1998 to 2010. Celebrated for his engagements with theatrical scenes, music, symphony, and movement, Elibekian’s masterpieces have graced prestigious institutions worldwide, including The National Gallery of Armenia, The Tretyakov Gallery, and The White House in Washington DC.

In 2019, Stephanie’s Art Gallery hosted Elibekian’s first solo exhibition, followed by the artist’s recognition as an Honorary Citizen of Yerevan in 2020. The National Gallery of Armenia will honor him this year with a solo retrospective exhibition in the capital.

 

Areg Elibekian (1970 – ):

Making his debut at Stephanie’s Gallery, Areg Elibekian, the youngest of three generations of renowned artists, presents his Impressionist-influenced works. Areg’s vibrant depictions of open-air scenes in Paris and Montreal, along with landscapes of the Costa del Sol, showcase his talent and unique perspective.

Areg, a 1992 graduate of Yerevan’s Institute of Drama and Fine Arts, has exhibited globally, with his works displayed in permanent collections across continents. His recent solo exhibition at the Robert Langen Gallery in Kitchner, Ontario, in 2023, was a testament to his growing international acclaim.

KOKO is an international artist and architectural designer. He holds a Masters in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University in New York. His design experience includes 6 years with world renowned architect Frank Gehry. It was during these years with Frank that KOKO also developed his artistic language as a painter; finding passion between his two worlds: art and architecture.

From an early age KOKO was drawn to abstract art. His mother was a fashion designer and father a culinary chef. Growing up in a household that embraced and cultivated artistic expression; KOKO began painting. His fascination with form and composition lead to his education in architecture. His background in design impacted his paintings that forever changed the course of his work. There is an identifiable vernacular in his painting that is clearly his own; KOKO’s signature style of painting. The paintings have vivid colors, strong brushstrokes and the soft touch of the human figures from his subjects. On graduation from the Lycée. Carzou devoted himself to studying painting in Montparnasse studios. He first showed his work at the Salon des Indépendents in 1930. Then he took part in various Salons, notably the Surindépendents, Salon d’Automne, Ecole de Paris, “Painters, Witnesses to their Times,” Comparaisons, etc. His first one-man show was held in a Rue de Seine gallery in 1939. Since then there have been more than one hundred one-man shows in Paris and elsewhere in France and abroad. Lynn Gertenbach studied art at The Art Institute of Colorado, in Denver, where she was a scholarship student: and at the Layton School of Art and Design, in Pasadena; The Art Center College of Design, in Pasadena; and at University of California, Los Angeles. She also studied with noted artists Sergei Bongart and Philip Gilkerson, as well as with Bernard Dunstan in England and Arul Raj in India. During her 40-plus year career, Gertenbach has exhibited her artwork in Europe and South America, and for 11 years she traveled to Japan to appear at her biannual shows.

She has received numerous Gold Medal awards and the Lifetime Achievement Award from The Art Institute of Colorado; and she has exhibited in group shows at the Laguna Art Museum, in Laguna Beach, California; the Pacific Asia Museum, in Pasadena, California; and the Isetan Museum of Art, in Tokyo.

In 2002, Gertenbach won First prize in the landscape category in the prestigious Autumn Salon held at the Edenhurst Gallery, in Beverly Hills, California. Gertenbach is a signature member of the Oil Painters of America, the California Art Club, and the Plein Air Painters of America.
