Dorothy Marootian (1921-2015) was an artist who found inspiration in the beauty of nature, including the surf, sea, desert, canyon, and sky. With her works imbued with grace, humor, and vitality, Marootian’s artistic talents took her to different parts of the world, including the USA, Europe, Asia, and Mexico.
Born in Connecticut in 1921, Marootian grew up in New Haven, CT, and later became a resident of Pasadena in the 1940s. She earned a BFA from Cooper Union in New York City and went on to participate in several selected invitational and juried exhibits throughout her career. Her works were featured at the Orange Country Fine Arts, Irvine Fine Arts Center, Irvine, CA, Pasadena Society of Artists, Pasadena Museum, Cal Tech, Pacific Culture Museum, and Chouinard Faculty Exhibit, L.A. She also had a one-person show at Jack Carr Gallery, South Pasadena.
Marootian received several honors and awards for her art, including eight show awards from 1991-2000 at the Orange County Fine Arts. She was also recognized by the Irvine Creative Arts Guild, where she received the Best in Show, Grand Prize, and First Prize. The Pasadena Society of Artists awarded her the McBride Landscape Award, Honor Award, and First Award for Art Slides.
Marootian’s works are part of several notable collections, including the U.S. Air Force, Pentagon, Washington D.C. (1984), Mitsui Manufacturers Bank, L.A., and numerous private collections.
In addition to her contributions to the art world, Marootian also made a mark in the design industry. She worked as an art director for Neiman-Marcus in Dallas and Bullocks in LA, and created designs for companies such as Max Factor, Lager & Assoc. in Hollywood, and Robinsons. Her designs included Christmas papers and cards, book illustrations, package design, and billboard design for May Co.
Marootian’s work was praised by the Pasadena Star News, which noted her ability to give a timeless quality to contemporary themes.
